Selling the little blue pill to treat erectile dysfunction has been linked to one in three men taking the drug, which the Food and Drug Administration says could potentially cause heart attacks and strokes.
The drug, called sildenafil citrate, works by increasing blood flow to the penis, causing a firm erection when stimulated.
The pills are sold in the United States under the brand name Viagra and have been linked to a small number of heart attacks and strokes.
The agency said it has been working with the FDA to monitor the drug and inform doctors about its use.
Sildenafil has been linked to heart attacks, strokes and sudden cardiac death in men aged 40 and above.
Dr David Adams, a cardiologist at the University of Melbourne, said it was "one of the biggest drugs ever created".
